My parents have spun out of control.

Lauren, Brooklyn (2/13/21)

My parents have spun out of control. Thanksgiving 2016, after Trump won the election, my father asked me if I voted (I guess he thought I wouldn't). He asked me who I voted for and I said Clinton. I had known they were trump supporters (they had signs over their lawn) and never brought up politics since I knew we didnt agree. My father berated me, yelling, so angry he was red and spitting and I sat at the table taking it for 15min like a bad child before I finally spoke up.

My mom was silent the whole time. When I opened my mouth I said I didn't vote for Trump because he's racist. That pissed my father off way more. After that night I was told I was not allowed in their home anymore. My mother felt like she was in a awkward situation because she saw I did nothing wrong to be yelled out and banned from their home, and she has to get along with my dad. Over these 4 years my father hasn't spoken to me and my mother has now become just as angry.

To be clear I've still never engaged with her in political discussions even though she will contact me every so often and just spew her viewpoints. She's now anti vax, extremely racist and xenophobic (and now comfortably being this way in public), only watches propaganda like Rumble/Breitbart/Newsmax, believes America is becoming socialist/communist, that Biden wants everyone on unemployment (my dad is all these things too but as I mentioned has disowned me). I'm embarrassed by them. And also really concerned how consumed with anger they are. They don't even sound sane. Trump has ruined my family.
